A grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference as the Biloxi Shuckers (10-15) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (9-15) 5-2 on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Holding a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the eighth inning, LHP Nathan Kirby (L, 0-1) came into the game for the Shuckers and induced a pop out from the first batter he faced. Jake Palomaki reached on an error in right field and came in to score on a Garrett Whitley double, drawing the Biscuits within a run at 2-1. Kirby issued walks to the next two batters before giving way to RHP Zach Vennaro (BS, 1), who struck out Moises Gomez before allowing a grand slam to Ford Proctor, his first home run of the season, to put Montgomery in front. It was the second go-ahead grand slam allowed by the Shuckers in the last four games.

LHP Ivan Pelaez (S, 6) allowed a double in the ninth inning but struck out two to record the save for Montgomery.

The late rally undid a career night from LHP Ethan Small, who struck out seven straight batters from the end of the first through the third. Small got into a jam in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, but struck out Jim Haley for his ninth strikeout of the night, setting a new career high. Small would add on two more strikeouts in the fifth, giving him 11 total strikeouts on the night, one shy of the Shuckers’ franchise record. All told, the southpaw hurled five scoreless innings and allowed one hit and four walks.

Biloxi jumped out to a lead in the fourth inning thanks to the second of three hits from Cam Devanney. Mitch Longo reached with two outs on a throwing error by Proctor, and Devanney followed with a double down the left field line, easily driving in Longo to put the Shuckers up 1-0. Devanney would add on the only other run of the night for the Shuckers with a solo home run to lead off the seventh, his first home run of the year, extending the lead to 2-0.

The Shuckers resume their six-game series with the Biscuits on Tuesday night. RHP Noah Zavolas (1-1, 4.08) gets the start for the Shuckers against Biscuit’s RHP Caleb Sampen (0-1, 8.62) for a 6:35 pm first pitch at Riverwalk Stadium. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, online here or on the MiLB App.
