PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (23-34) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as part of a 5-1 win against the Biloxi Shuckers (35-24) on Wednesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Jake Gatewood homered in the loss, his eleventh of the season.
The Shuckers threatened in the top of the first inning. Corey Ray walked to start the game and moved to second when Keston Hiura reached on a fielding error by Alberti Chavez. RHP Vladimir Gutierrez (W, 2-8) escaped the inning unscathed, forcing a double play that ended the frame.
Pensacola took advantage of their opportunities in the bottom of the first. LHP Kodi Medeiros (L, 4-3) walked Shed Long with one out and hit Nick Longhi with a pitch, placing two runners on base for Brian O'Grady. The Blue Wahoos right fielder worked a full count before hitting a ball to the gap in right, plating both runs on his first triple of the season, putting Pensacola up 2-0. Luis Gonzalez singled up the middle in the ensuing at bat, driving in O'Grady to make it 3-0. Medeiros settled down after that, retiring the next nine batters in a row. All told, the lefty hurled five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six.
Gatewood put Biloxi on the board in the fourth. With two gone, the Shuckers first baseman crushed a ball to left field for his eleventh home run of the season, tying him for the Southern League lead. After being named to the Southern League South Division All-Star team earlier in the day, Gatewood finished the night 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.
RHP Miguel Sanchez entered the game in the sixth for Biloxi and allowed two runs on a solo homer by O'Grady, his fifth of the season, and a single by Chavez, putting Pensacola back out in front 5-1. LHP Nick Ramirez, who was named to the Southern League All-Star squad as well, hurled two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts for Biloxi.
RHP Carlos Navas (S, 2) picked up the save after tossing three scoreless frames. Biloxi hit into three double plays on the night and were held to just two hits in the final four innings.
