A five-run ninth inning was too much to overcome for the Biloxi Shuckers (32-32) in a 10-6 defeat against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (34-27) on Thursday night at MGM Park. With the victory, the Blue Wahoos clinched the first half South Division title.
It was a pitchers’ duel early in the contest with RHP Victor Castañeda making his first start for the Shuckers in almost two weeks. The righty hurled three scoreless frames, allowing just a single while not walking a batter and striking out four. For the Wahoos, RHP Zach McCambley (W, 3-4) did not give up his first hit until the fifth inning and issued just one walk through his first four frames.
Pensacola struck first in the top of the fifth inning. LHP Nick Bennett (L, 3-6) issued a one-out walk and after a stolen base, Bubba Hollins singled to left, driving in the runner to make it 1-0 Pensacola. A double drove in a second run in the frame, putting the Wahoos ahead 2-0. Pensacola would open up a 5-0 advantage after scoring three in the top of the sixth on two singles, a double and a hit batter.
The Shuckers knocked out McCambley in the home half of the sixth. Noah Campbell doubled with one out, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, and Joey Wiemer was hit on the following pitch, putting two men on base. McCambley struck out Pedro Severino before walking Thomas Dillard to load up the bases. Jakson Reetz lashed a single to center, driving in two runs to pull the Shuckers within three at 5-2. RHP Anthony Maldonado (H,2) struck out the following batter to strand two men and stifle the Biloxi threat.
Biloxi put together another threat in the bottom of the eighth inning when Wiemer walked with one out and Severino singled, bringing the tying run to the plate with only one out. RHP Jefrey Yan (H, 4) induced a double play in the next at bat, yet again shutting down the Shuckers’ scoring chance.
The Wahoos struck for five runs in the top of the ninth inning, opening up a 10-2 lead, but the Shuckers would fight back in the home half of the inning. Reetz singled to open the stanza, his third hit of the night, and after a sharp line out, Cam Devanney doubled to the left-field gap. The double extended Devanney’s hitting streak to 16 games, the longest hitting streak in Shuckers’ franchise history. Yeison Coca, Terrance Doston and Campbell all notched RBI singles, driving in three runs for the Shuckers to make it 10-5. An RBI fielder’s choice by Wiemer brought home another run but RHP Colton Hock struck out the last Biloxi batter to close out the game.
Still leading two games to one in their six-game series against the Wahoos, the Shuckers continue their tilt with Pensacola on Friday night. RHP T.J. Shook (2-0, 4.82) gets the nod for Biloxi against Wahoos’ RHP Bryan Mitchell (1-0, 5.14) for a 6:35 pm first pitch.
