Straily has been on the disabled list since the beginning of the season with a right forearm strain, which was suffered midway through Marlins spring training. Straily, 29, is a native of Redlands, California, and today will mark his first start in the Southern League.
After he was acquired by the Marlins in a trade from the Cincinnati Reds on January 19 2017, he went 10-9 with a 4.26 ERA in 33 starts for the Marlins last season. He set career highs in starts (33) and strikeouts (170) in first season with Miami, and led rotation in starts, strikeouts, and innings pitched (181.2).
"We just want to make sure he's ready," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said earlier this week. "We'd love to have him back right away to bring that veteran into the rotation. With him, you know what you're going to get. But we want him to be ready and feel like he's ready to compete."
Straily has pitched in parts of six major league seasons since 2012, starting with the Oakland Athletics (2012-14), Chicago Cubs (2014), Houston Astros (2015), Cincinnati Reds (2016), and Marlins (2017). In his big league career, Straily is 37-30 with a 4.25 ERA in his 119 appearances and 109 starts. Straily's best season came in 2016, when he was 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA in 31 starts for the Reds, and was the unanimous winner of the Johnny Vander Meer Award as Reds' Most Outstanding Pitcher, as voted by Cincinnati chapter of BBWAA.
The Jumbo Shrimp roster stands at 25 active players, plus Straily on his rehab assignment and a revised roster is attached.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Smokies will continue their series with the fourth game of the five-game set on Tuesday afternoon at 12 p.m. Straily will start for Jacksonville against Tennessee right-handed starter
