LANSING, Mich. – Austin Beck knocked a grand slam and Lazaro Armenteros swatted a solo home run, but those two swings provided the Lansing Lugnuts’ (4-11) only offense in a 13-5 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps (11-5) on Sunday afternoon at Jackson® Field™. The TinCaps outscored the Lugnuts 51-28

The TinCaps outscored the Lugnuts 51-28 in the six-game series, winning five of the games.

Fort Wayne broke this one open early, using a two-run double from Brandon Valenzuela and two-run single from Justin Lopez in a seven-run second inning to build an 8-0 lead.

The Lugnuts struck back with the long ball.

In the third inning, Armenteros’s third roundtripper of the year put the Lugnuts on the board.

In the fifth inning, Beck’s second grand slam in as many seasons with the Nuts brought the home squad within three runs at 8-5.

But Lansing’s bullpen couldn’t quiet the TinCaps’ offense, which tallied once in the sixth and seventh against Joe DeMers, twice in the eighth against Kumar Nambiar and once in the ninth off Angello Infante to put the game out of reach.

The ‘Caps finished with 14 hits alongside eight walks and four HBPs, going 7-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

In defeat, the game saw the return to the mound for 2018 A’s third-rounder Hogan Harris for the first time since August 2019. The southpaw from Louisiana-Lafayette struck out two while allowing an unearned run in the first inning before walking the first two batters in the second inning and departing in favor of Osvaldo Berrios (5 IP, 5 hits, 5 runs, 5 walks, 2 K).

There were also a pair of notable injury substitutions: The TinCaps’ Joshua Mears, who had hit five home runs off Lansing pitching, was struck by a Harris pitch in the first inning and left due to precautionary reasons, as did the Lugnuts’ Tyler Soderstrom after getting hit by a foul ball while catching in the third inning.

The Lugnuts enjoy a league wide off day on Monday before traveling to Lake County for a six-game series beginning Tuesday. The Nuts’ next homestand will see 12 games in 13 days played at Jackson® Field™ from May 3-15. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit lansinglugnuts.com or call (517) 485-4500.
