COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. – Jack Winkler homered, Osvaldo Berrios pitched effectively into the sixth inning, and the Lansing Lugnuts (3-6) took the finale of a six-game series, 5-3, from the West Michigan Whitecaps (6-3) on Sunday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark.

The Whitecaps won four of six games in the series.

Winkler, the Oakland Athletics’ tenth-round selection in 2021 from San Francisco, opened up the scoring by crushing his first professional home run, a two-run shot, off Tigers 2021 first-rounder Ty Madden in the second inning.

Euribiel Ángeles delivered an RBI single off reliever Matt Walker in the fifth and Brett Harris followed with an RBI double for a 4-0 Lugnuts lead.

In the sixth, the Lugnuts added insurance on a Gabriel Maciel RBI single.

Berrios had allowed five runs to the Whitecaps in four innings in the Tuesday series opener, but dazzled in his second go-round against the East Division’s most prolific offense. He set down 13 of the first 14 batters he faced, limiting the ‘Caps to a walk and two singles in the first five innings. The right-hander departed one out into the sixth after allowing three straight hits and two runs, finishing with six strikeouts.

Diego Granado thwarted further West Michigan hopes for offense with an inning-ending double play, and then blanked the Whitecaps in the seventh before handing the baton to Kumar Nambiar for a scoreless eighth.

The Whitecaps crept within 5-3 in the ninth against Angello Infante on a Carlos Irigoyen RBI single. With the tying runs on base, however, Infante retired Bryant Packard on a fly ball to Maciel in right to end the game.

Maciel finished 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and a walk, while both Winkler and Ángeles went 2-for-4 in the winning cause.

The Lugnuts now return home, following a Monday off day with the first of a six-game homestand against the Fort Wayne TinCaps on a Tacos and Tallboys Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. at Jackson® Field™.
