Moosic, PA (July 4, 2023) – In a game befitting the fireworks that followed the action, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (40-40, 4-3) rallied from an early 3-0 hole and then pulled a Houdini out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the ninth inning to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (38-42, 4-2) by a final of 5-4 on Tuesday night at PNC Field.
The RailRiders jumped out to their early lead courtesy of Everson Pereira, as he smashed a three-run homer in the first.
The IronPigs finally got on the board in the fifth. Cal Stevenson walked to begin the inning and Jake Cave then singled him to third. A Weston Wilson groundout plated Stevenson before Kody Clemens scored Cave with a single to make it a one run game.
Stevenson began the seventh with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored to tie the game on another Wilson groundout.
In the eighth, the IronPigs completed their comeback. Drew Ellis legged out an infield single and Simon Muzziotti walked. After a popup, Rafael Marchan singled through the left side, scoring Ellis with the go-ahead run. Scott Kingery followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Muzziotti and make it 5-3.
The RailRiders trimmed to a one-run game in the eighth on a run-scoring double play before they loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth. Andrew Bellatti (S, 3) stood tall however, inducing a 5-2-3 double play and a groundout to escape the jam with the win, 5-4, for the IronPigs.
Jacob Barnes (1-0) worked 2.1 innings out of the bullpen without allowing a run to earn the win for the IronPigs. He allowed just one hit, striking out three.
Michael Gomez (0-4) suffered the loss for the RailRiders, allowing three runs in two frames on one hit and two walks, striking out one.
The IronPigs continued their series against the RailRiders on Wednesday, July 5. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
