SPRINGFIELD, MO – The Cardinals scored five runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to cap a seven-run comeback as Springfield set a new franchise record with their ninth consecutive win, 8-7 over the Wichita Wind Surge on Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field. The Birds have begun the season 9-0 for the first time in franchise history and will enter play Tuesday with a four-game lead on the Arkansas Naturals.

Notables:

  • The Cards’ five-run eighth was tied for their second-biggest inning of the season. Springfield scored six runs in the bottom of the 3rd in game two of their doubleheader against Wichita on Friday.
  • Springfield has swept their first two series for the first time in franchise history.
  • Matt Lloyd’s go-ahead home run in the 8th was his first longball with Springfield and as a member of the Cardinals organization.
  • RJ Yeager extended his season-opening hitting streak to eight games with a 5th-inning single and remains atop the Texas League with 11 RBIs.
  • Bryan Torres collected two hits and two more stolen bases for a league-high seven SB.
  • Nathan Church collected three hits, his second three-hit game of the season.
  • The Cardinals pitching staff walked a season-high seven batters.
