MONTGOMERY, AL - With the aid of three sacrifice flies, RHP Zack Brown (W, 2-0) tossed 7.0 scoreless innings to help the Biloxi Shuckers (21-12) blank the Montgomery Biscuits (14-19) 3-0 on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Shuckers struck against Biscuits starter RHP J.D. Martin (L, 1-5) in the first inning. Corey Ray started the frame with a single and moved to second when Troy Stokes Jr. was plunked by a knuckleball. Lucas Erceg moved the runners over with a groundout before Jake Gatewood flied out to center, allowing Ray to race in and score to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead.
Brown kept the Biscuits off-balance throughout the evening, retiring the side in order in the first, third and fifth. He allowed just two singles, both to Brandon Lowe, and didn't allow a base runner to advance past second.
Biloxi added two more in the fifth thanks to some aggressive base running. Clint Coulter and Wendell Rijo both walked to start the inning, putting a pair on for Ray. The Shuckers centerfielder shot a ball deep into the outfield, allowing Coulter to tag up to third. While Nick Solak was collecting the throw in from the outfield, Coulter raced in to score, adding an additional run to the Shuckers' lead. After a single by Stokes moved Rijo to third, Erceg flied out to left, driving in Rijo and pushing Biloxi to a 3-0 advantage.
The lone jam that Brown had to work around came in the sixth inning. He put two runners on after a hit by pitch and walk, but induced a weak groundball from Lowe that turned into a double play, ending the frame. Brown matched his career high in innings pitched when he retired the side in order in the seventh. The 23rd-ranked prospect in the Brewers' organzation allowed just two hits in 7.0 innings and walked two while striking out six.
After a scoreless frame from Nick Ramirez, RHP Nate Griep (S, 12) struck out two in the ninth to lock down his MiLB-leading 12th save of the season, closing out the Shuckers' fourth shutout victory of the season.
