The Biloxi Shuckers (11-9) jumped out to an early four-run lead behind Weston Wilson's fifth home run in as many days, but saw the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6-14) score eleven in a row and avoid the sweep in an 11-6 defeat. The come-from-behind loss was the largest surrendered by the Shuckers this year and closes their ten-game home stand with a 6-4 mark.
Wilson's two-run homer opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Jacksonville starter Jordan Yamamoto (W, 1-2). Patrick Leonard walked and Blake Allemand brought him in with a single for an early 3-0 lead. The home run was Wilson's fifth of the series in which he finished 10-for-19 with nine RBI and ten runs scored. Michael O'Neill followed in the second inning with his second big fly of the season to make it 4-0.
Biloxi starting pitcher Alec Bettinger (L, 0-2) faced the minimum and struck out three across the first three innings but ran into insurmountable trouble in the fourth. Magneuris Sierra walked to leadoff and the Jumbo Shrimp then linked together seven consecutive hits and forced Bettinger from the mound. Justin Twine, Joe Dunand and Bryson Brigaman all drove home a run on singles and John Silviano followed with a two-run double. Rodrigo Vigil reached on a bunt single and Anfernee Seymour knocked in Silviano to make it 6-4. The six runs were the most allowed by Shuckers pitching in a single inning this year.
Nattino Diplan retired Jacksonville in order upon entering in the fourth, worked two innings, and allowed one more run in the fifth. Devin Williams faced nine batters in the sixth and was tagged for four more runs on four hits, swelling the deficit to 11-4.
With eleven unanswered on the board, Trent Grisham put an end to the run with a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning, his second on the season. Patrick Leonard added the final run with two outs in the ninth with a left-field double, scoring Bruce Caldwell and settling the game at 11-6.
The Shuckers now head out of town for a ten-game road trip beginning on Thursday in Chattanooga. Biloxi will send RHP Marcos Diplan (0-1, 6.75) to the mound against Lookouts LHP Scott Moss (0-1, 6.75). The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
