A solo home run by David Hamilton in the ninth inning was the lone hit and run scored by the Biloxi Shuckers (32-56) in a 4-1 defeat against the Mississippi Braves (52-36) on Friday night at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves took the lead in the bottom of the second inning.
RHP Carlos Luna (L, 1-3) allowed singles to Shea Langeliers and Riley Unroe and got to a two-out, two-strike count to Jacob Pearson, but Pearson connected for a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the year, putting the M-Braves ahead 3-0.
Biloxi got their first base runner of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a lead-off walk to Hamilton. The Shuckers’ shortstop advanced to second on a ground out by Korry Howell but was stranded in scoring position as RHP Victor Vodnik (W, 1-4) struck out the next two batters. All told, Vodnik faced one over the minimum over five hitless innings and struck out nine.
Mississippi added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Pearson, giving him four RBIs as the M-Braves widened their advantage to 4-0.
RHP Peter Strzelecki and RHP Robbie Hitt pitched the final 3.2 innings for Biloxi and allowed just two base runners while striking out eight to keep Biloxi in the ballgame.
The Shuckers best chance to put up a crooked number came in the top of the eighth inning. RHP Daysbel Hernandez walked Thomas Dillard to start the inning but got a double play ball from Gabriel Garcia to eliminate both base runners. Hernandez then walked the next two batters but struck out Cam Devanney to preserve the no-hitter and strand a runner in scoring position.
In the ninth, RHP Brooks Wilson entered for the M-Braves and fell behind 2-1 to Hamilton before the shortstop teed off for a solo home run to right field, his third at Double-A, breaking up the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing. The home run also extended Hamilton’s hitting streak to 10 games, meaning the Brewers’ #26 prospect has hit safely in every game at Double-A. Wilson would retire the next three batters to finish off the game.
Seeking their first win in the series, the Shuckers continue their six-game tangle with the M-Braves on Saturday night. RHP Lucas Erceg (0-4, 5.97) gets the start for Biloxi against M-Braves’ RHP Bryce Elder (6-1, 3.60) for a 6:05 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
