Thomas Jankins (W, 6-1) rattled off a career-high eight strikeouts over seven shutout innings in the Biloxi Shuckers' (24-12) 1-0 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (15-21) on Saturday night. The win extends a franchise record nine consecutive victories at home for Biloxi.
Jankins was clicking on all cylinders on the mound. The product of Quinnipiac University worked around trouble on two early occasions and was lights out after that. With the bases loaded in the top of the first thanks to a hit, a walk and an error, Jankins got Brian O'Grady to fly out to centerfield. In the third, Luis Gonzalez singled followed by a Daniel Sweet double. On the play, Gonzalez was sent home but was cut down on the relay from Corey Ray to Lucas Erceg to the catcher Dustin Houle.
Following the third inning double, Jankins surrendered just a hit and a walk. He struck out the side in the fourth and picked up his career high eighth K by fanning Taylor Sparks in the seventh.
The Shuckers' lone run came in the second inning off starter RHP Daniel Wright (L, 2-2). After Jake Gatewood reached on a throwing error by Sparks at third, Jake Hager doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. With one out, Clint Coulter slashed a line drive up the middle to bring home Gatewood.
LHP Nick Ramirez (H, 4) grabbed a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth, while RHP Nate Griep (S, 14) collected his MiLB-leading fourteenth save in a relatively uneventful ninth.
The Shuckers look to pick up their fifth straight win, and tenth at home, on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM CT when RHP Cody Ponce (1-2, 7.32) deals against RHP Keury Mella (3-1, 1.89). On Mother's Day, there will be yoga on the field from Noon to 1 PM, and discounted tickets are offered for active and retired military personnel with a valid ID on another Military Salute Sunday presented by Keesler Federal Credit Union.
