The Biloxi Shuckers (15-27) fell in both games of a doubleheader, 3-2 and 6-1, against the Rocket City Trash Pandas (22-10) on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Field.

Game 1

The Trash Pandas started the scoring in the home half of the second inning on a solo home run by Mitch Nay, giving Rocket City a 1-0 advantage. Ray-Patrick Didder singled and stole second before scoring on a double to left field by Anthony Mulrine, putting the Trash Pandas up 2-0.

Biloxi responded with one of their three hits against LHP Reid Detmers (W, 2-2) in the top of the third. David Fry drew a leadoff walk, and two batters later, Cam Devanney connected for a first-pitch home run, his third of the season, to tie the game at 2-2.

Rocket City moved back in front on a flare double to center field by Didder and an RBI single by Mulrine off RHP Noah Zavolas (L, 2-4). Biloxi threatened against Detmers in the top of the sixth inning when Tyler Friis and Payton Henry both singled, but Detmers recorded his 14th strikeout, a punchout of Luis Castro, to stymie the scoring chance.

In the bottom of the frame, RHP Lucas Erceg pitched a perfect inning, striking out one batter to keep the Shuckers within striking distance. RHP Oliver Ortega (S,3) came in for Rocket City in the top of the seventh and retired the Shuckers in order, ending the game.

Game 2

In the second contest, RHP Brooks Hall was pitching well but left in the bottom of the second after an apparent injury while moving to cover first on a double play. LHP Cody Beckman replaced Hall and worked 1.2 scoreless frames.

The Trash Pandas broke through in the bottom of the fourth against LHP Leo Crawford (L, 1-5). Dalton Pompey and Orlando Martinez both singled to put two runners on with no outs and Pompey moved to third on a flyout by Nay. Izzy Wilson singled to right to drive in the first run of the game and Martinez scored from third on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. Didder finished the scoring with another RBI double, putting the Trash Pandas up 3-0.

Rocket City put up another three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Nay and a two-run homer by Ibandel Isabel, giving the Trash Pandas a 6-0 lead.

RHP Kyle Tyler (W, 4-1) retired the first 16 batters in order before Brent Diaz ripped a single to center. The lone run of the game for Biloxi came in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Brice Turang, his third of the season. Diaz’ single and Turang’s homers were the only hits in the game for the Shuckers.

After a day off on Monday, the Shuckers return to MGM Park for a six-game series against the Montgomery Biscuits starting Tuesday night at 6:35 pm. LHP Nick Bennett (1-2, 5.85) is slated to start for the Shuckers against Biscuits’ RHP Peyton Battenfield (1-0, 0.00). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
