A night after playing just five innings at Trustmark Park on Wednesday, the Biloxi Shuckers (47-36) dropped their second straight game to the Mississippi Braves (35-49) 4-1 on Thursday night.
Biloxi put men on base in eight of the nine innings they came to bat, but had chance after chance foiled by M-Braves starter LHP Bruce Zimmermann (W, 1-0). In the first, Troy Stokes Jr. and Jake Gatewood both singled, but were left on base after a pair of groundouts.
RHP Luis Ortiz (L, 1-4) mowed down the M-Braves in the first two frames but ran into trouble in the third. Luis Marté started the inning with a single and swiped second, moving into scoring position for Zimmermann, who squibbed a single into centerfield, plating the run to make it 1-0 Mississippi. The M-Braves snagged two more runs in the fourth on a flair single to center from Daniel Lockhart and a stroke to left by Alex Jackson, pushing the Braves to a 3-0 advantage.
Tyler Heineman spearheaded the charge in the sixth for the Shuckers. The catcher ripped a single into right with one out and went first to third on a frozen-rope single from Trent Grisham, placing men at the edges with one gone. Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. bounced out to third, but grounded the ball deep enough to score Heineman, giving the Shuckers their first run at 3-1. Heineman finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Yet again, Biloxi gained a pair of base runners right out of the gate in the seventh. RHP Kelvin Vasquez (H, 3) issued two free passes to Corey Ray and Stokes, placing runners on first and second for Gatewood. The first baseman scalded a ball right back to Vasquez, who speared it out of the air and doubled up Ray at second. Lucas Erceg would bounce out to end the inning.
Mississippi put the game out of reach with a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Connor Lien. RHP Chad Sobotka (S, 2) closed it down in the ninth, working a 1-2-3 frame, the lone inning the Shuckers were retired in order. All told, Biloxi stranded 10 men on base and went 0-for-13 with men in scoring position.
Game three of a four-game series starts at 7 PM on Friday night. LHP Kodi Medeiros (5-4, 3.54) gets the start against M-Braves LHP Tyler Pike (0-1, 0.73). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/ FM 100.9, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
