The Biloxi Shuckers (75-47, 34-18 2nd Half) took both games of a doubleheader against the Mobile BayBears (43-76, 16-35) on Thursday night at MGM Park. The Shuckers claimed Game One 3-2 in walk-off fashion and rolled to a 7-3 victory in Game Two.
Game 1
Biloxi took the lead in the second inning thanks to a lead-off homer by Jake Gatewood, his 13th home run of the season, to put the Shuckers up 1-0. Mobile replied with two runs in the top of the third, stringing together four consecutive singles to score two runs and jump in front 2-1.
In the home half of the third, Cooper Hummel doubled with one out and advanced to third on an opposite-field single by Weston Wilson. Dillon Thomas bounced a ball to short that looked like it might turn into an inning-ending double play, but the Shuckers outfielder legged out a fielder's choice, driving in Hummel to knot the game at 2-2.
RHP Tyler Spurlin tossed three innings of scoreless relief and RHP Rodrigo Benoit (W, 1-0) added a scoreless top of the seventh. Biloxi started the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle by Luis Aviles Jr., Hummel then worked a walk against RHP Brett Hanewich (L, 0-5), bringing Wilson to the plate with the winning run at second and no outs. Wilson initially squared to bunt, but after working a 2-0 count, swung away and ripped a single into left field, scoring Aviles for a 3-2 Shuckers victory.
Game 2
The Shuckers jumped all over BayBears starter RHP Luis Madero (L, 4-10) in the first inning of Game Two. Aviles singled to start the frame, Hummel worked a walk and Wilson was hit by a pitch, loading up the bases with no outs. Thomas sharply lined a ball to second that Jahmai Jones knocked down, but the Mobile second baseman bobbled the ball and didn't record an out at any base, allowing the first run of the game to score. Gatewood followed with a two-RBI single to right, extending the Shuckers advantage to 3-0. A Bruce Caldwell sacrifice fly supplied another run for Biloxi and Ryan Aguilar capped the scoring in the first with an RBI single to center, putting the Shuckers ahead 5-0 after just one inning.
RHP Johan Belisario didn't factor into the decision but pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Biloxi and Mobile traded runs in the third before the BayBears drew within four yet again on a sacrifice fly by Julian Leon in the fourth. C.J. Hinojosa widened the margin to five runs again in the last of the fourth with an RBI single, giving the Shuckers a 7-2 lead.
LHP Clayton Andrews (W, 1-0) pitched the last three innings of the game, allowing just one run on a solo home run to Bo Way in the seventh, his sixth of the season and second of the ballgame. Andrews surrendered just one other hit and walked one while striking out two en route to his first Double-A victory.
Looking to stretch their winning streak to double-digits, the Shuckers face off against the Mobile BayBears again on Friday night at MGM Park. Biloxi is scheduled to send RHP Drew Rasmussen (1-3, 4.14) to the mound against BayBears RHP Andrew Wantz (0-4, 5.57) for a 6:35 pm first pitch.
