The Biloxi Shuckers announced on Tuesday that the team will wear special Biloxi Police Department uniforms on Thursday, August 15against the Mobile BayBears as part of First Responders Night. The jerseys will be auctioned off during the game, with the proceeds from the jersey auction benefitting the Robert McKeithen Family Fund. Gates will open at 4:00 pm for the second annual Guns 'N Hoses softball game from 4:15 to 5:15 pm ahead of the Shuckers game at 6:35 pm.
"Ever since the tragic death of Officer McKeithen that rocked the entire Biloxi community, we have been trying to find a way to give back to Officer McKeithen's family," said Biloxi Shuckers General Manager Hunter Reed. "This is a night to honor our First Responders and pay our respects to a fallen officer while bringing the community together. We hope that we will be able to continue to support Officer McKeithen's family and show them that they are always in our thoughts."
A 24-year veteran of the Biloxi Police Department, Officer Robert McKeithen was shot and killed in an unprovoked attack at the Lopez-Quave Public Safety Center on May 5, 2019. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, McKeithen was a recipient of the Medal of Valor by the Biloxi Police Department for his work during Hurricane Katrina and is survived by his wife, daughter, two stepsons and stepdaughter.
Designed after the Biloxi Police Department's uniforms, the Shuckers jerseys will have the Biloxi Police Department crest on the right sleeve and the Shuckers logo on the left sleeve. The left breast of the uniform will bear a Biloxi PD badge, with '126' across the badge, the badge number of Officer McKeithen. The right breast of the uniform will have 'R. McKeithen, Serving Since 1995' to honor Officer McKeithen's years of service with the Biloxi Police Department.
"The men and women of the Biloxi Police Department greatly appreciate this show of support by the Shuckers," said Biloxi Police Chief John Miller. "Since their arrival in Biloxi, the Shuckers have been an outstanding community partner."
Those in attendance on August 15 will be able to bid on the game-worn jerseys in a silent auction from the time the gates open until the end of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, the bidding process will take place in a live auction format in front of the Shuckers Shop on the MGM Park concourse. Following the game, winning bidders will go down to the field and receive their game-worn jersey from Shuckers players. Local partners are also donating tickets for the game that will be available to First Responders around the Gulf Coast.
Fans with a ticket to the Shuckers game are encouraged to arrive early to cheer on our First Responders in the Guns 'N Hoses game starting at 4:15 pm. It's also Double Play Thursday presented by Polk's Meat Products, Yuengling, Coca-Cola and Kicker 108, with $2 Yuengling drafts, $2 sodas, $2 hot dogs and $3 draft beer specials.
