PENSACOLA, FL - For the second night in a row, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (24-34) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and it was enough to hang on for a 3-2 win over the Biloxi Shuckers (35-25) on Thursday night at Blue Wahoo Stadium.
Biloxi got on the board on the first pitch of the ballgame. Corey Ray launched the first offering from RHP Wyatt Strahan (W, 5-4) over the left field wall, his ninth of the season, to instantly give the Shuckers a 1-0 lead. It is Ray's fourth leadoff home run of the season.
Pensacola needed just three batters to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. CJ McElroy singled to start the inning and stole second during the next at bat. After a fly out by Shed Long, Nick Longhi delivered a double to left that plated McElroy, evening the game. Two batters later, Luis Gonzalez put the Blue Wahoos in front 2-1 with a single. Gonzalez would steal second and score on a single by Narciso Crook, capping the scoring for Pensacola.
RHP Trey Supak (L, 0-2) settled in after the first, allowing just three hits in his remaining five innings of work. All told, the righty hurled six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while not walking a batter and striking out four.
Jake Hager brought the Shuckers within a run in the fifth. The All-Star shortstop launched a leadoff home run, his sixth of the season, to narrow the Blue Wahoos margin to 3-2. Biloxi had an opportunity to tie the game in the sixth, after loading the bases on three walks with one out. Hager stepped to the plate and smashed a ball right at Pensacola shortstop Luis Gonzales, who threw to second to turn an inning-ending double play.
The Shuckers put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth inning. Trent Grisham worked a two-out walk against RHP Alex Powers (S, 5) and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Heineman bounced a ball to Gonzalez at short, who bobbled it, giving Biloxi new life with the fielding error. However, Grisham was caught taking a wide round of third on the ground ball and was tagged out in a rundown, ending the game.
Biloxi moves to the second leg of their ten-game road trip as they travel to Jacksonville for a five-game series against the Jumbo Shrimp that starts on Friday night at 6:05 PM CT. The Shuckers will send All-Star RHP Thomas Jankins (7-3, 4.95) to the mound against Jumbo Shrimp RHP Cody Poteet (2-6, 5.08). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
