On April 17, 1964 the New York Mets took on the Pittsburgh Pirates on a sunny day in Queens, in what was the first game in the history of Shea Stadium. Over the next four-plus decades this ballpark would become a home for many of us - a place where we went to our first game, a place where we met our heroes and got an autograph, the place we saw the home run apple rise and cheered our faces off. Maybe some of us were even lucky enough to catch a foul ball or a home run.
