The Bisons dropped the opening game of a four-game series with their thruway rival Syracuse, 8-1, on Friday night at Coca-Cola Field. The Chiefs capitalized on superb pitching from Taylor Hill and used a four-run second inning to grab the win.
The Chiefs' big second frame began with a two-run single from Spencer Kieboom. The catcher took a 1-2 pitch and drove it to right field to score Neftali Soto and Clint Robinson. Syracuse then used a double from Caleb Ramsey and a groundout from Emmanuel Burriss to plate Kieboom. Rounding out the frame was Andrew Stevenson with a line drive single to centerfield, bringing Ramsey home and stretching the Chiefs' lead to 4-0.
Syracuse added a pair of runs to seal the game in the fourth and sixth innings respectively. Clint Robinson batted a solo homer in the fourth for his eleventh of the season and he also made it to home plate in the sixth when Ramsey grounded into a double play.
Hill gave the Chiefs a solid outing from the mound, pitching a complete eight innings. The righty allowed the only Herd run and three hits on the evening.
Raffy Lopez gave the Herd their only score of the afternoon after drilling a pitch to right field on a full count for his first triple of the season. The catcher made his way home after a passed ball by Kieboom with Petit in the batter's box.
T.J. House started for the Herd and pitched for six innings. The southpaw gave up six runs, nine hits, and a pair of walks on the evening. Wil Browning came in relief for a couple of innings, allowing a single hit in the process. John Stilson closed the game out, surrendering two runs off of three hits.
The Herd will play next on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. for the second game of their series with Syracuse. Buffalo will have Cesar Valdez (3-2, 3.92 ERA) on the mound and Edwin Jackson (0-0, 2.36 ERA) will start for the Chiefs.
