Iowa Drops Finale in Extras

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (60-46) gave up two runs in the 10th inning to fall by a score of 6-4 to the Toledo Mud Hens (47-60) in the series finale, Sunday at Principal Park.

The I-Cubs got in front in the first on a bases loaded walk by Pete Crow-Armstrong to take a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the third, when Colt Keith used a two-run double to put Toledo ahead 2-1.

Iowa swung back in front in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from David Bote and a wild pitch that allowed Miles Mastrobuoni to score. Chris Clarke held the 3-2 lead for the I-Cubs, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.

The righty didn’t allow a single hit, walking one and striking out two of the 10 batters he faced. As soon as Clarke came out, the Mud Hens got back in front, scoring on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Justyn-Henry Malloy.

Yonathan Perlaza quickly evened the score with a solo home run in Iowa’s half of the sixth inning, his 16th of the year. The game stayed tied 4-4 until the 10th, when Keith drove in another run with his second double of the game.

He later came around to score on a sacrifice fly, moving Toledo’s lead to 6-4. That was all the Mud Hens needed as they won their fifth game of the series.

POSTGAME NOTES:

• After two days off, Yonathan Perlaza went back to business out of the leadoff spot for Iowa. The switch hitter went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a home run and a run batted in, growing his batting average to .293 on the year with Iowa.
• In his first outing with Iowa and his first start since 2016, Shane Greene spun two scoreless innings. The veteran righty allowed one hit and one walk.

Iowa gets the day off tomorrow and will travel to Omaha to take on the Storm Chasers beginning on Tuesday. First pitch between the two teams is set for 7:05 pm CT at Werner Park.
