COLUMBUS, OH – The Iowa Cubs (18-11) got swept in the doubleheader by the Columbus Clippers (15-16), dropping game one by a score of 5-1 and game two 4-3 in extra innings, Saturday at Huntington Park.

Jhonkensy Noel got the scoring started with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to go up 1-0. The score stayed there until the fourth, when Jake Slaughter clubbed his third home run in as many days, tying the game at one.

That was all the scoring Iowa would manage, as Columbus scored in each of the next three innings to go up 5-1. They got RBI singles from Micah Pries and Brayan Rocchio and a two-run double from Roman Quinn in the fifth.

In his first game with the Clippers this year after getting optioned from Cleveland, Zach Plesac spun seven innings of one-run ball. The righty allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six to earn the victory.

Columbus got in front in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice. They kept a 2-0 lead until the fifth, when Brennen Davis gave Iowa the lead with one swing of the bat. Davis clubbed his third home run of the year, a three-run shot to put Iowa ahead 3-2.

The Clippers tied it in the home-half of the fifth with a sacrifice fly and it would stay tied at three until the eighth inning. Rocchio gave Iowa their first walk-off loss of the year, driving an RBI single to right field to sweep the doubleheader.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Jake Slaughter clubbed a solo home run in game one to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, but went 0-for-4 in game two, snapping the streak. His home run gave him three consecutive games with a home run.
Yonathan Perlaza was Iowa’s only batter in game two to not strikeout. Four batters had multi-strikeout games, as they struck out 13 times as a team.
