Baseball returns to Principal Park on Monday — 281 days after the last Iowa Cubs home game. But it won’t be the Iowa Cubs playing. It will be two teams from rural Iowa as the state resumes high school athletics during a worldwide pandemic.
Tri-County will meet Colfax-Mingo on Monday, June 15 — Opening Day for Iowa high school baseball teams after spring sports were canceled and summer sports delayed due to COVID-19 safety measures.
The game will be one of the first high school contests in the nation since the coronavirus shut down sports at all levels in March.
The game will be the first played in 2020 at Principal Park in Des Moines, home of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. The Major League Baseball season never started and remains in limbo; the Minor League Baseball season along with it.
The high school game is one of three on June 15 and one of 16 scheduled during a 17-day stretch at Principal Park, site of the state tournament for the 16th consecutive year in late July.
Ankeny Centennial and Des Moines Roosevelt will play a Central Iowa Metro League double-header later on June 15.
Admission to the high school games is $8. Children 3-under are admitted free. Tickets will go on sale one hour before game time. There is no charge to park in Principal Park lots. Concession stands will be open. All purchases — tickets, merchandise, concessions — will be cashless transactions.
Principal Park will also host several college-level games this summer. Players from various summer leagues — which canceled their seasons — and other Iowa collegiate players will showcase their talents in a series of double-headers.
Principal Park will follow all COVID-19 guidelines set by the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Department of Education and the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Seating capacity has been reduced to 1,933 and social distancing guidelines will be enforced.
