DES MOINES – The Iowa Cubs, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, announced today that top prospects Matt Shaw, James Triantos and Kevin Alcántara will be joining Iowa from Double-A Tennessee.
Shaw, the No. 29 prospect in baseball and No. 2 in the Cubs’ organization, was selected 13th overall in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Maryland. He batted .279 (87-for-312) with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 50 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 86 games with Tennessee. Since June 26, Shaw is batting .395 (30-for-76) and ranks among Southern League leaders in hits (T-6th), runs (T-7th, 18) and total bases (T-8th, 48) during that time frame.
Triantos, the No. 51 prospect in baseball and No. 4 in the Cubs’ system, ranks among Southern League leaders in hits (1st, 107), triples (T-1st, 5), batting average (2nd, .300), total bases (2nd, 156), runs (2nd, 63), stolen bases (3rd, 38) and extra-base hits (T-8th, 30). He is one of four minor leaguers to have at least 105 hits and 35 stolen bases.
Alcántara, the No. 63 prospect in baseball and No. 6 in the Cubs’ organization, is hitting .271 (79-for-291) with 13 doubles, nine home runs and 39 RBI.
Iowa’s active roster features six of the Cubs’ top 10 prospects.
