After scoring 15 runs across its first two games of the season, the Norwich Sea Unicorns were only able to bring two across the plate in Sunday’s 8-2 loss to the Worcester Bravehearts.
Norwich’s four through seven hitters were a combined 0-for-13 on the day. Four of the Sea Unicorns’ five hits came off the bats of Danny Melnick and Connor Podeszwa.
Kolby Pascarelli, the lefty UConn commit, struggled in his first appearance of the season on the bump.
He retired just four batters before being removed from the game in the second inning. He allowed five runs (three of them earned) on three hits while also walking three.
Sean Wininger relieved Pascarelli and did a phenomenal job keeping Norwich in the game.
Only three of the 13 Worcester hitters he faced reached base in his 3.2 innings of work, with none of them getting a hit in that span.
Despite the stellar performance from Wininger, Norwich’s offense just couldn’t get things going.
After Worcester starter Clay Robbins was pulled after five innings of work, four Bravehearts relievers combined for four innings of one-hit ball to close out the game.
The Sea Unicorns finished their season-opening road stand with a 1-2 record.
The team returns to Norwich Monday for its home-opener against the New Britain Bees at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:30 pm.
