METAIRIE, La. - The defensive woes continued for the Nashville Sounds Monday afternoon as they dropped their fourth consecutive game to the New Orleans Baby Cakes 7-4. Six of the seven Baby Cakes runs were unearned after the Sounds committed three errors.
The errors began right away for the Sounds as the first two New Orleans batters reached on errors by third baseman Sheldon Neuse. Following a strikeout, Sounds starter Brett Anderson then yielded a triple, a double, and a pair of singles to put New Orleans in front 5-0 after one inning.
Nashville got a run back in the third inning when Slade Heathcott collected his first hit of the 2018 campaign, a home run to right center field. The momentum was short-lived as New Orleans capitalized on another Sounds error. J.B. Shuck served a routine fly ball into center field but the ball was dropped by Dustin Fowler, allowing Christhian Adames to score from second base.
New Orleans capped off its scoring in the seventh inning as Jonathan Rodriguez launched his first home run of the season off Raúl Alcántara. It was one of just two hits allowed by Alcantara in his four innings of relief work.
The offense came alive for the Sounds in the ninth inning but it was too little too late. Nashville loaded the bases with no outs for Anthony García who laced a double to the gap in center field to plate a pair of runs. Neuse then came around to score on a ground out by Nick Martini. Following a walk to Beau Taylor, the Sounds brought the tying run to the plate but Steve Lombardozzi popped out and Heathcott struck out to end the game.
Nashville hosts the Iowa Cubs in the 2018 home opener Tuesday night First Tennessee Park. Right-hander James Naile starts for the Sounds while Iowa counters with right-hander Alec Mills. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
