The Shorebirds, in conjunction with The Brace Place, are once again partnering with local schools for the annual Hit the Books program. Over 50,000 students at more than 110 schools on the Delmarva Peninsula participated in this event last year that encourages children to read outside of the classroom.
The initiative kicks off with a bookmark design contest open to all participating students, with the winning design being distributed to schools all over the region at the start of Hit the Books in January.
Students who reach their reading goal are rewarded with two tickets to a Shorebirds game at the start of the season. In addition to a fun night out at the ballpark, participating schools get to take part in a pregame parade on the field.
As an added incentive for students to take advantage of the free tickets, the Shorebirds donate to the two schools with the highest redemption rate.
