Aunque ya ha completado siete maratones, Lefler dijo que solía odiar correr. Cuando pesaba casi 250 libras, se dio cuenta de que "necesitaba hacer algunos cambios".

Después de unirse al equipo de WooSox Grounds en 2021, Lefler perdió más de 100 libras a través del trabajo duro y el entrenamiento. Desde entonces, ha corrido cuatro Disney World Dopey Challenges (cuatro carreras en cuatro días consecutivos), el Maratón de Boston en 2016, el Maratón de Filadelfia y el Maratón de Hartford.
A lo largo de la temporada de los WooSox, dijo que se vuelve más difícil entrenar, particularmente durante las estadías en casa cuando está en Polar Park "alrededor de 100 horas a la semana" para preparar el campo de béisbol para los próximos juegos.
"No tengo tiempo para hacer un gran volumen de millas, así que trataré de maximizar lo que pueda corriendo los escalones [de la explanada de Polar Park] con un chaleco de pesas de 20 libras durante unos 45 minutos", dijo Lefler.
