LYNCHBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (13-25) earned their first series victory on Sunday as they defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats (20-19) by a score of 2-1.
After a scoreless first three innings, the Shorebirds broke the seal in the fourth. With runners at the corners and two outs, Noelberth Romero dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line to reach safely at first, scoring Thomas Sosa in the process to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher, Blake Money, delivered four shutout innings on the mound to lead the Shorebirds, striking out four to keep the Hillcats off the board.
After a pair of scoreless innings by Jared Beck, Delmarva added to their lead in the seventh thanks to a no-doubt, solo home run by Aneudis Mordan. His team-best fifth long-ball of the season made it a 2-0 game.
Jiorgeny Casimiri entered for Beck in the seventh and tossed a 1-2-3 frame. He handed the baton to Alejandro Mendez who threw a perfect eighth inning, taking the game to the ninth with Delmarva still ahead 2-0.
Grabiel Salazar entered for the final frame and the Hillcats put the pressure on him as they broke the shutout with an RBI single by Wuilfredo Antnez to make it a 2-1 game. With runners at second and third with two outs, Salazar delivered with the game on the line as Esteban Gonzalez lined out to first base, putting a bow a 2-1 victory for Delmarva.
In relief, Jared Beck (3-3) earned the win with his two scoreless innings as Grabiel Salazar (3) picked up the save, his third of the road trip. The loss was handed to Lynchburg stater, Matt Wilkinson (3-1).
With the victory, Delmarva earned their first series victory of 2024 as they won four of the six games in Lynchburg, finishing with a winning record of 7-5 on the 12-game road trip.
