JUPITER, FL – For the eighth time this season, the Palm Beach Cardinals (69-43, 32-14) delivered a walk-off win as they defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads (59-53, 23-23) by a final score of 3-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Jose Cordoba smacked his third walk-off hit of the season, an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning, to score Ian Petrutz to give Palm Beach a series split against Jupiter.

After no runs scored through the first three innings, the Hammerheads picked up right where they left off in the top of the fourth inning off of Palm Beach starting pitcher Leonel Sequera. After Fenwick Trimble led off the frame with a triple, Carter Johnson drove him in on an RBI groundout to put Jupiter in front 1-0.

The Beach Birds had no answer on offense against Jupiter starting pitcher Walin Castillo who went five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits on 49 pitches.

Sequera worked his way into the top of the seventh inning. After getting the first two outs, Sequera walked Payton Green which ended his start. Henry Gomez (W, 6-3) was the first Cardinal out of the bullpen and after Connor Caskenette hit a single, Ryan Campos committed a throwing error trying to get Caskenette stealing which allowed Green to score from third base to give the Hammerheads a 2-0 lead.

For the first time since the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday night, the Cardinals finally crossed home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning in the finale. After Petrutz led off the frame with a double, Anyelo Encarnacion got Petrutz across home plate two batters later on an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Palm Beach went back to work on offense in the bottom of the eighth inning as Bryce Madron led off with a double and Christian Martin reached on a bunt single. With runners at the corners and no outs, Campos hit a sacrifice fly to score Madron to tie the game at 2-2.

Gomez escaped a jam in the top of the ninth inning as he left two runners on base to keep the game tied. Jesse Bergin (L, 1-1) came out of the Hammerheads’ bullpen for the bottom of the ninth inning. Petrutz led off with a single and with nobody out Cordoba ripped a double down the left field line to give the Cardinals the 3-2 walk-off win on Sunday.

The Cardinals now lead the regular season “Dual of the Dean” series 13-8 over the Hammerheads and with one more win take bragging rights in 2024. Petrutz led the Palm Beach offense as he finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Madron also went 2-for-3 as the only other Cardinal with a multi-hit game.

Sequera finished with a career-high 6 2/3 innings pitched in a no-decision allowing just two runs of which only one was earned.

The Cardinals hit the road for six games as they visit the St. Lucie Mets beginning Tuesday, August 20th. Palm Beach returns home to host the Daytona Tortugas on Tuesday, August 27th before closing the regular season against the Jupiter Hammerheads from September 3-8.
